Frequently Asked Questions

  • How will the new collection method work?

Each home with an active Del Rio water account will be supplied with a 95 gallon roll cart for weekly garbage collection. On the collection day, residents must ensure that containers are set out in their curbside location. 6:00am.

RRWS then empties the containers using trucks equipped with hydraulic tippers.

  • I've always put my trash in the alley behind my house. Can't I continue to do this?

No. Alley collections will no longer be made. Trash put in alleys will not be collected under the new contract.

  • How do I use my roll cart?
    • All materials placed in the cart must be bagged, no exceptions.
    • Lid on the cart MUST be completely closed to guarantee collection.
    • Carts with inappropriate materials, or not set out properly, could be bypassed by garbage trucks and customers will have to wait until their next collection day.
    • Carts must be out by 6:00 a.m. on your collection day to ensure service.
    • Remember to remove your roll cart from the street within 24 hours of collection.
    • IMPORTANT! Excess garbage, whether bagged or not, left beside the carts will NOT be picked up and may be subject to penalties or additional fees.

  • Why change from the existing manual system?
      1. Service Improvements and User Convenience.
      2. Residents are no longer required to buy bags or containers.
      3. Semi-Automated technology allows each container to be completely dumped 100% of the time.
      4. Carts are convenient, maneuverable, easy to roll and extremely durable.
      5. Semi-Automated collection eliminates manual loading of refuse, thus reducing job-related injuries to the collectors as well as reducing workman's compensation claims.
      6. Environmental Benefits and reduce spillage & ground contamination.
      7. Roll carts reduce odor and insect problems due to self closing lids.
      8. Roll carts help reduce scattered garbage from domestic and wild animals.

  • Will the carts have sufficient capacity for my needs?

Yes. The 95 gallon roll cart is equivalent to over four average-sized garbage cans.

Additional carts are available for high volume customers for an additional charge.

Contract the City to request additional roll carts.

Only garbage that is properly placed inside the roll cart will be collected.

Excess refuse can be disposed of at the Landfill.

  • What kind of garbage can I put in the cart?

All regular "BAGGED" household garbage may be placed inside the carts. Anything placed inside the cart must be able to fall freely when dumped. All garbage must be bagged and tree branches bundled to prevent wind scatter when dumping.

  • Where do I store my cart?

Most residents choose to store carts in a convenient location such as their carport, garage or at the side of their house. The footprint (dimensions at the base of the cart) is not appreciably larger than average-size garbage containers.

  • Is there a certain way my cart should be set out for collection?

Yes, on your designated collection day, place your roll cart as described below. Remember point cart handle to the curb and the lid opening to the street.

  • What happens to the cart if I move?

The cart is the property of the RRWS and is assigned to each residential property through an address and serial number. The cart remains at the residence once it is sold; the cart does not move with the occupants.

  • What happens if my cart is damaged, lost or stolen?

Every address is assigned a cart so carts can be traced to each house address. Cart problems associated with normal wear and tear will be repaired by RRWS. However any carts that are stolen or damaged through neglect or misuse will be replaced at the property owners' expense.

Contact customer service at 775-1910. The City/RRWS will assess the situation and make arrangements for you to receive a replacement or repair.

Residents are responsible for routine maintenance including keeping the carts clean, removing the carts from the street after collection and storing the carts in a safe place.

  • My family generates more waste than will fit in the 95 gallon roll cart. Can I get another?

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the current recycling options available to them to reduce the amount of garbage they need to place at the curb.

More information on recycling options can be found at the City's website or telephone 774-8558.

However, if necessary, additional carts are available at an additional monthly charge. Please contact City Hall for the proper form to complete.

  • I put my garbage out at the proper time, but it wasn't collected. What do I do now?

Check the roll cart for a non service tag.

It may have been blocked by a parked car, too bulky or heavy, or uncollectible for some other reason; the tag will explain why it wasn't collected.

Improperly prepared or inaccessible garbage will be picked up on your next collection day, when the reason for non-collection has been corrected.

If there is no tag, simply leave your garbage cart out until it is collected. If you have any questions please call customer service 775-1910.
